La tecnica del Primo Stile a Pompei: nuove acquisizioni a partire dall'analisi degli stucchi della Casa della Nave Europa (I 15.3)

In the fi eld of research on the so-called First Style wall decorations, there are very few studies that deal with the techniques used in the creation of stucco ornamentation. Th e contribution presented here investigates this aspect starting from the analysis of the cubicula 4 and 6 of the House of the Ship Europa (I 15, 3) in Pompeii, whose decoration represents an ideal case-study considering the rarity and complexity of the solutions adopted. Th anks to the identifi cation of the work phases and tools used by the ancient decorators, it has been possible to clarify some little-known aspects related to the creation of stucco decorations and to reconstruct an overall picture of the working methods of a plasterer’s workshop active in Pompeii between the 2nd and 1st centuries BC.

Nel settore delle ricerche sulle decorazioni parietali rientranti sotto la defi nizione di Primo Stile rarissimi sono gli studi che trattano delle tecniche utilizzate nella realizzazione dell’ornato in stucco. Questo contributo indaga tale aspetto a partire dall’analisi dei cubicula 4 e 6 della Casa della Nave Europa (I 15, 3) a Pompei, la cui decorazione rappresenta un caso-studio ideale considerata la rarità e la complessità delle soluzioni adottate. Grazie all’identifi cazione delle fasi di lavoro e degli strumenti utilizzati dagli antichi decoratori è stato possibile chiarire alcuni aspetti poco noti sulla produzione delle decorazioni in stucco e ricostruire un quadro complessivo sulle modalità di lavoro di una bottega di stuccatori attiva a Pompei a cavallo tra II e I secolo a.C.
