Abstract
!e working process of architectural elements, and of column capitals in particular, represents an ideal case study for investigating the relationship between artefact form and working technique. !is contribution intends to offer a synthetic overview of the work phases adopted by the marble cra#smen active in the quarries of Proconnesus and the workshops of Constantinople for the serial production of capitals between the 5th and 6th centuries. An in-depth study is dedicated to the phases of production of a composite capital with a double crown of “butterfly acanthus” leaves: a very rare type, known mainly in the architecture of Ravenna, for which a reconstruction of the procedure used to sculpt the element is proposed.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
