This paper presents the first results of a study concerning the visual relationship between the rooms clustered around the peristyle in the House of Centenary (IX 8, 3-6) at Pompeii. The research undertaken on the interrelated system of rooms consisting of exhedra-triclinium and viridarium-nymphaeum, has allowed to understand that the painter managed to make the paintings of the garden visible from the triclinium, through visual axes skilfully calculated. The same can be said about the nymphaeum, oriented by the architect to be clearly visible from the interior of the exhedra. This suggests that even the tricliniar couches had been arranged to have a view focused on the paintings decorating the sides of the viridarium, characterized by an unusual combination of a wild landscape and a peaceful garden.

Abstract
This paper presents the first results of a study concerning the visual relationship between the rooms clustered around the peristyle in the House of Centenary (IX 8, 3-6) at Pompeii. The research undertaken on the interrelated system of rooms consisting of exhedra-triclinium and viridarium-nymphaeum, has allowed to understand that the painter managed to make the paintings of the garden visible from the triclinium, through visual axes skilfully calculated. The same can be said about the nymphaeum, oriented by the architect to be clearly visible from the interior of the exhedra. This suggests that even the tricliniar couches had been arranged to have a view focused on the paintings decorating the sides of the viridarium, characterized by an unusual combination of a wild landscape and a peaceful garden.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
